Modern Trends in Sports Administration and Management

0

One of the major factors militating against the development of sports in Nigeria today is lack of effective management. A lot of solutions are being proffered by concerned and patriotic Nigerians daily to bail us out the quagmire. One of such solutions is this text entitled “Modern Trends in Sports Administration and Management”. It is written by Dr. Joseph Awoyinfa, a lecturer in the Department of Human Kinetics and Health Education, Faculty of Education, University of Lagos, Nigeria; a researcher and educational consultant. I was the person invited by the author and the university to review the book when it was presented to the public on December 4, 2008 in Nigeria.

According to Awoyinfa, it is a truism all over the world that sport is now a reference issue which can no longer be ignored at various sectors of the economy and spheres of life. The author adds that this text thus takes a critical look at topical issues in sports administration and management, dwelling on theories and principles of modern trends in sports administration and management such as leadership, organisation, planning, motivation, etc.

The text contains 16 chapters. Chapter one is christened “the concept of sports management”. Here, Awoyinfa says management is a concept that implies different things to different people at different times, thus leading to its multiplicity of definitions. He explains that management has been variously described as an art, a science, a person or people, a discipline and a process.

This author expatiates that as an art, sports management is all about carrying out sports organisational functions and tasks through people; while as a science, sports management is about establishing sports philosophy, laws, theories, principles, processes and practices. As an organisation, according to him, sports management is defined as a means of creating formal structures and an establishment based on a mission, objectives, targets, functions and tasks.

Awoyinfa says as a person or group of people, sports management may refer to the head alone or to all the senior staff, committee, etc.; while as a discipline, management is a field of study with various subjects and topics. The author illuminates that sports management as a process is about a systematic way of doing things. Awoyinfa highlights management functions in sports administration as planning, organising, staffing, directing/leading, controlling, coordination, budgeting and evaluation. On whom a sports manager is, this author educates that a sports manager is anyone at any level of sport organisation who directs
the efforts of other people towards the achievement of organisational goals sport-wise.

Chapter two is based on the subject matter of evolution and trends of sports management thought. Here, Awoyinfa discloses that the development of thoughts on sports management dates back to the days when people first attempted to accomplish goals by working together in a group. In his words, “There was serious thinking and theorising about managing many years before the dawn of the twentieth (20th) century, which marked the beginning of modern sports management thought. Major efforts to develop theories and principles of sports management began from the early twentieth (20th) century with the work of Frederick Taylor and Henri Fayol. The industrial revolution of the nineteenth (19th) century probably provided the climate for this very serious theorising.”

Awoyinfa adds that since the turn of the 20th century, writers on sports management and business theory have been propounding different theories about how to manage work and personnel more efficiently and effectively. This author educates that the three main schools of management thought are: the classical; the human-behavioural; and the integrative. Awoyinfa also highlights early sports management theorists; principles and characteristics of scientific management; appraisal of the scientific management theory, etc.

Life of professional athletes isn’t easy

0

The life of professional athletes isn’t easy. They have to participate in intensive exercises and training activities constantly to deliver maximum performance in front of an audience.

While these activities are crucial for athletes to stay in shape, they can also damage their body.

Sports medicine is a growing healthcare field dedicated for treatment of injuries related to sports and exercise like fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains, tendonitis, overtraining syndrome and degenerative diseases.

Besides injury treatment, it also focuses on helping the athletes improve their performance prevent future injuries.

Despite being a relatively new medical specialty, it has become essential for athletes thanks to its ability to address their specific needs and concerns.

Who is a Sports Medicine Doctor?

A sports medicine doctor is a licensed and trained individual who focuses on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of injuries related to athletic activities.

These specialists treat their patients using physical therapy, orthopedic surgery, massage therapy, exercises, and other techniques so that they can return to their desired activity level quickly, safely and successfully.

They also teach the athletes on nutrition to help them maintain an optimal level of health and fitness and achieve their sports performance goals.

The sports medicine team includes sports physiotherapists, sports massage therapists, sports orthopaedic surgeons, sports podiatrists, athletic trainers, sports dieticians, exercise physiologists and sports biomechanists.

Common Sports Injuries:

Some common sports injuries athletes suffer on the filed include ankle sprain, groin pull, hamstring strain, knee injury, tennis elbow, Achilles tendinitis, concussion, shoulder injury, hip bursitis, quadriceps strain and shin splints.

They can also experience the exacerbation of pre-existing health problems like diabetes, asthma, allergies and arthritis.

Reasons to Visit a Sports Medicine Doctor:

There are many reasons for an athlete to see a sports physician.

Let’s take a look at some of them.

(1) Customized Care:

Sports medicine doctors are specially trained healthcare professionals who have an in-depth understanding of what could be the impacts of an exercise on their patient’s body. They collaborate with physical therapists and orthopedic surgeons to develop a customized treatment for their patient.

(2) Injury Prevention:

Sports physicians can provide the athletes with expert advice on the how to prevent injuries during the practice or play and how to reduce the likelihood of resurfacing a previous injury. They also conduct pre-participation physical exams of their patients to determine whether they are fit enough to resume sports activities.

(3) Pain Management:

Sports injuries may lead to several orthopedic issues that often cause chronic pain, making it difficult for the athletes to return to the game and carry out their activities.

While the primary aim of sports physicians is always to diagnose, treat and resolve the injury, they also use pain management therapies like electrical stimulation, spinal decompression, prescription medications and injected medications, to help their patients prevent or defer the need for surgery and continue their daily activities without any hindrance.

(4) Rehabilitation:

For an athlete, a return from an injury can be a complicated and lengthy process. If you find yourself sidelined by an injury, a sports physician can help you restore your movement and function and return to same or higher level of fitness quickly.

(5) Improving Athletic Performance:

Sports physicians diagnose and treat uncomfortable conditions to help you deliver your maximum performance, both on and off the field.

They also suggest you exercises and techniques to improve your strength and balance that contribute to your success as an athlete.

(6) Improving overall Fitness:

Sports physicians help athletes prevent muscle sprains, strains and tears to keep their bodies in shape.

They also conduct full body and musculoskeletal examinations to help them maintain their overall fitness.

(7) Non-Surgical Treatment:

Sports physicians try to avoid surgery in less severe cases and instead focus on treating injuries with non-surgical methods like physical therapy and acupuncture.

Are You A Sports Fan Or Sports Fanatic?

0

I’m here to ask a very good question are you a sports fan or a sports fanatic? I looked up both definitions and the dictionary states for a fan the meaning is “an enthusiastic devotee or follower of sports or sports team” the meaning of a fanatic is “a person with an extreme enthusiasm or zeal for sports or sports team”. The difference between a sports fan and a sports fanatic is a very fine line. I consider myself a fanatic, and I will give you my opinion of the fine line that separates a fan and a fanatic.

A sports fan will have a favorite team that they follow when they have the time. The fan will know some facts or history about their favorite team. The fan will try to go and see their favorite team when they have some free time, and it fits in their schedule.

A sports fanatic eats, sleeps and breaths everything about sports. A sports fanatic will know every single fact or history detail about every sport. They know every rule, every player of a team, and every detail that has to do with that team or sport. A fanatic will try their hardest to go to every game of their favorite team, and if they can’t go to the game they will have a hand device or smart phone that can access the latest news or updates of the game.

The major necessity for a sports fanatic that doesn’t go to the game is a huge obnoxious movie cinema size flat screen TV that takes up half of their living room. It must have surround sound stereo speakers, so it sounds exactly like sitting in the sports stadium. The furniture in the living room must consist of a large comfortable sofa, with a couple of reclining chairs and foot rests. There must be plenty of sitting room for the fanatic to invite all his or her friends over for the “big” game.

The final necessity for a sports fanatic is the food. There needs to be plenty of food so it feels like they are tailgating in their own kitchen. There must be plenty of potato chips, dips, tortilla chips, pizza, hamburgers, and hot dogs, and much more available for the game. The most important is the beverages which consist of a case of beer that would fit in the refrigerator or they have their own personal little refrigerator that will hold the beers, and other beverages.

Sports fanatics will also have a lot more sports team gear and memorabilia than a sports fan. A sports fanatic needs every little sports memorabilia of their favorite sports teams from the sports team jersey to a little sports team spoon. The fanatics are also most likely the ones that dress up in hideous sports team gear, and have face paint all over them in the stadiums.

How Does Fashion Influence the Lives of Students?

0

This is an era of fashion and fashion is very influential to our lives. In fact, it adds diversity to our lives by offering an aspect of enthusiasm to strive for something new and different, otherwise it would be a monotonous life if we were supposed to dress up and act in the same manner.

Fashion is an expression of a distinctive style particularly in clothing, footwear, accessories or makeup. It belongs to the style of doing something, looking different and dealing with others. It encircles a wide range of categorization like behavior, speech, actions, manners and lifestyle. There is much intellectual discussion over fashion and clothing and their importance within present day society. Fashion and clothing can be defined as many things that hold our society together. Fashion can be defined as an existing norm or style of dress, manners and way of socializing, whereas clothing is defined as garments collectively. If fashion and clothing were eliminated from our lives there would be no room for individuality and the world’s population would be the same. There also would be a loss of the distinctions between social classes, which was much defined in the 18th century but is still present today. The eradication of fashion and clothing would also change the dynamics of the social world and social relationships.

Mod, short form of ‘modern’, refers to a youth lifestyle that came out from London during 1960s and quickly spread to other parts of the world. Being fashionable is not only desirable but also satisfying. It is very usual that the young students get attracted to fashion the most and start following the trends instantly so fashion influences our youth strongly. Fashion continually has an impact on the society. It affects our views and attitude towards social culture. We introduce new ways of lifestyle through fashion and create awareness within ourselves to reinstate a new line of customs. It is a leading social statement for students to make an outside appearance to their social circle. Malcolm Barnard says in his book Fashion as Communication, “Fashion and clothing have always been explained as forms of communication” (39). Students use fashion to exchange their feelings and beliefs. They use fashion as a way of social contact with reference to scrutiny for all sorts of people. Fashion is a way of communication to convey with the world what their personality really says.

The decade of 1920 is called the Age of Flaming Youth because of its wild and jazzy expression. In this period the energy of youth was set free in a new way and no style seemed too ridiculous to become a high fashion. Our world has globalized. Celebrities play very important role in the lives of youth. Students look up to their favorite icons to keep themselves up to date. While watching television or using internet, they can easily be attracted by a variety of fashionable concepts. Moreover, the students idealize their favorite celebrities and they always have a desire to look like them so they do their best to imitate the appearance and lifestyle of their idols. They are trying to grasp all the existing fashion from their society to enhance their personality. Whenever they socialize, they talk about new things which could be adapted. They use non-natural way of expression, speech and mannerism in their routine lives which is relatively artificial.

In my point of view, there are two categories i.e. positive and negative impact of fashion on students.

The fashion in our society has a lot of negative impact on students. They only think about new fashion and this result in spending of a large amount of money. Therefore, they are not able to become aware of other important needs of life. It always distracts them from studies. Once a style or fashion gets in a trend, it is instantly chased by student community regardless of the fact that how much hassle it leads to. On the other hand they are caught in the confusion of fashion due to impact of society. To follow a certain fashion, one has to adopt some actions and to do so some students go beyond their limits just to attract their surroundings. Eventually they become hopeless instead of being ingenious and suffered from depression for being within fashion. On the other hand, it is also a thought that the money spending on Fashion could be spent for various other purposes like charity and helping the poor.

How to Become a Successful Fashion Designer

0

If you are like me you live and breathe fashion. You are constantly inspired with so many new designs racing through your mind, so many you can’t seem to get them all down quick enough at the pace they arrive. You constantly dream of the day your fashions will be on the fashion runway with the lights beaming brightly overhead, the cameras flashing everywhere and the audience being completely mesmerized by your incredible designs. You can’t stop thinking of the day you will open a magazine or watch the Oscars and see a famous celebrity in one of your breathtaking designs. Your book shelf is stocked with fashion books and magazines, and you absolutely can’t resist visiting textile stores to view all the latest fabrics, decorative beads, rhinestones and trims.

It’s this ever present dream of being a successful fashion designer that has you work day and night on your designs in most cases for many years without pay and working a job to pay the pills which is brutal torture, when all you can think about is living and working in fashion.

Famous fashion designers come from all walks of life there is no one system to follow that will have you become the next famous fashion designer. Some have graduated from elite fashion schools and some have never attended fashion school. Some have undertaken a fashion internship with a fashion house and others have made their own designs in their basement. The only elements all these fashion designers have in common is they had an intense passion for fashion, were able to design fashions highly sought after and connected with someone who gave them the opportunity to break into the fashion industry. It is essential in becoming a successful fashion designer you get you and your designs out there as much as possible, as how will anyone know about your fashions if they can’t see them?

In getting your fashions out there here are a few things you can do:

1. We are not usually good at everything some of us are great at designing clothes but lack the sewing and pattern making skills. It is here you can partner with someone who shares your passion for fashion and has the skills you lack. It is in the bringing together of different skills you can create a real product that can be showcased.
2. In having a fashion line of 14 outfits you can apply to your local fashion week. In the USA: New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco all have fashion weeks. These fashion weeks attract many editors, journalists and local socialites who will see your fashions and potentially give you the exposure you need to get known.
3. Many city night clubs hold fashion shows, find out what night clubs hold fashion shows and contact them as to how you can be apart of an up and coming show.
4. Locate fashion boutiques that cater to the fashions you design, first make a trip to the stores to look around, if you can see your clothes fitting in well with the store, find out who the owner is and ask if they would be willing to have some of your fashions offered for sale in their store. You will be amazed at how many store owners are willing to work with you. I walked around San Francisco in the Nob Hill district and had my fashions placed after visiting and discussing my product with four boutiques. In having your fashions displayed you will receive valuable insights as to whether or not your designs are in demand and if you need to change your designs to increase sales. It will also give you free exposure to the public. When your fashions do sell you can present this to investors who are more than willing to invest in your line, when you prove the existence of a strong demand for your fashions.

If you are struggling to create your fashions due to the lack of capital, connections or all the skills required, you can visit: [http://www.cluehut.com] where it’s free to create a profile stating what you need and who you are hoping to connect with in achieving your fashion dream. You can also browse and connect with others who like you have created a profile offering opportunities where together you can become a great success in the fashion business.

The Lifestyle and Its Research

0

Lifestyle research stands at the boundary between a number of traditional academic disciplines, developing expertise from sociology and the social sciences in areas as distinct as business, retailing, marketing, understanding of consumers, and health and social care. The very diversity of fields and disciplines with an interest in lifestyle research creates complexity in an already dynamic and fast-changing area of research. Multifaceted approaches are used, alongside a variety of academic and business conventions, but typically, lifestyle research focuses on subgroups within the general population defined by age, occupation, religion, sexuality, medical conditions, or behaviors.

In terms of business research, this market segmentation of the consumer market is a key use for lifestyle research. As the importance of the consumer in determining the success of business operations has become increasingly clear to businesses, so the importance of lifestyle-based market segmentation has increased and the importance of ongoing cultural change has been recognized. Ongoing social and cultural change, both in purchasing dynamics, in related group behavior, and in lifestyle decision making are illuminated by lifestyle research but also act as a key source of information for strategic planning within business and for the ongoing development of successful corporate strategy.

The links between lifestyle research and the development of successful marketing strategies are currently being discussed within the academic literature, both from a management perspective and from a social science perspective. The development of an increasing understanding of the diverse research that contributes to this area of study is key to the ongoing development of successful and strategic business development. Typically, research in this area is grounded first in the concept of lifestyle and relates this to various aspects of an individual or group lifestyle. Key themes that may influence lifestyle include activities/behavior, values and attitudes, individuals versus groups, group interaction, coherence, recognizability, and choice.

Within this definition, lifestyle research may focus either upon the implications of belonging to a certain group or upon the implications of certain lifestyles, including areas such as the role of lifestyle in the management of clinical conditions or the impact of a voluntarily adopted lifestyle on other areas of an individual’s life. In business terms, lifestyle research is used both to classify consumers in terms of patterns of behavior, purchasing, etc., and as a way of looking at lifestyle as a key factor in the generation of new products, services, etc. One important distinction lies between research that attempts to identify causal relationships between a lifestyle and the development of certain patterns of health and behavior and an alternative pattern of lifestyle research that evaluates the impact of lifestyle changes.

Both have considerable implications for business, being directly linked to the development and promotion of goods and services. The lifestyles assessed may be proscriptive-and much of the research in this area lies in health-or broader changes that reflect the development of society, the economy, and the workplace. Business research generally focuses upon this latter scenario, where the intertwining of cause, effect, and incremental change provides fruitful ground for research. One useful example of this intertwining is the relationship between the availability of processed ready-meals and the lack of availability of time for cooking. Does a lack of time trigger the demand for ready-meals? Or does the availability of ready-meals facilitate broader changes in lifestyle that tend to mitigate against the “ring fencing” of time to devote to cooking?

The answer to such questions is unlikely to be simple-and in this example the ongoing development of skills within the consumer group would play a contributing role-but this example illustrates the complexity of cause, effect, and contributing factors within lifestyle research. Lifestyle retailing is an additional important area of study, where the promotion of a “lifestyle package” linked to a brand, a group of products, or a service forms part of the marketing strategy for many companies. The creation of aspirational brands within a consumer economy-be they products or services-is a key driver for many businesses. Typically, however, this builds upon initial market-segmentation work, and successful lifestyle retailing strategies tend to indicate a very well-researched and clearly identified market-segmentation strategy.

Building upon this, so-called subcultures of consumption have been a focus for some additional study focusing around ideas and theoretical frameworks from general consumption literature and applying these in a variety of servicescapes. A more recent approach to segmentation, for example, has included Web-based-related lifestyle research, where access, enthusiasm, and propensity to use internet resources formed a key defining a part of an individual or group lifestyle and hence the basis for recent research.

5 General Ways For a Better Lifestyle, Fitness and Health

0

Definition of Life style: A way of life or style of living that reflects the attitudes and values of a person or group A lot of people go through life used to a certain lifestyle only because that is what they have known from birth. Our family, friends, work; media all shape the lifestyle we live. Some never get the opportunity to be exposed to anything different and easily develop habits which live with them till death.

We are all generally averse to change and some NEVER admit to having an unhealthy or adverse lifestyle and shut themselves off to anything better. There are however lot of ways to break the habit and live a better life because lets admit it we can all be better them we are now. A lot of us are desperate for a lifestyle change, lifestyle lift, healthier lifestyle, lifestyle fitness. Let’s look at 5 ways to do this.

1. Improve your Mind.

It cannot be over emphasized the importance or having an improved and open mindset. The first change has to come from within. How can you do this? Self discipline… We sometimes know what is right for us and how improve our lives but never do it because we tell our minds that it can’t be done, it’s not worth doing, do it as you know it. Without self discipline it is very difficult to live differently. Get a diary or a small book, writing out your goals. Start with e.g. eleven things to achieve in 2011. Make a commitment to yourself and discipline your mind and strive to achieve your goals. You can set daily goals, weekly or monthly lifestyle improvement goals. You then have action these goals and tick them off your list.

2. Always Know Your Starting point.

We down play our achievements only because we never take stock of our starting point. To make a positive and improved lifestyle, note your current state. Example, if you want to become healthier and loose 2stones. The wise thing to do is weight yourself now and then you will know if you have achieved your goal in say 2months. The same will apply to all your goals and by the end of a year you will be surprised how far you have come. Any change is a radical step as you all telling your whole body that we are changing course, you must know how effective the change has been

3. Boost Your Energy Level.

Feeling energetic is a key to happiness and to self-esteem, so take steps to keep your energy high. Exercise, even a quick ten-minute walk will increase your energy and boost your mood, this really works. Energy (or lack of energy) is contagious. If you feel and act energetic, you’ll help the people around you feel energetic, too. Be careful also of what you read and watch as this makes you energetic or not. You have to sole responsibility with what enters your body. Get enough sleep, listen to good music, talk to friends as all these will give you a lifestyle change.

4. Watch your entry points (ears and eyes).

There are two main entry points into your body and most of us never control what comes in. Your life will be shaped by what you listen, read, watch. Ignore all the junk on TV for at least an evening in a week and search the internet for, lifestyle questionnaires, join lifestyle blogs, read healthy lifestyle tips. Look for lifestyle websites and find products to improve your lifestyle.

5. Live a Luxury Lifestyle the easy way.

This is somehow a controversial point but a luxurious lifestyle need not be luxurious and I will explain. Did you know that rich people live a very cheap lifestyle?, a rich man or woman will but an expensive car which will not break down for the next 6years, the rich will shop in bulk taking advantage of all the offers of buying in bulk, they will pay for a gym and get all the best exercise available e.t.c. The one who settles for a “mediocre” lifestyle buys a second hand car that is serviced every two weeks and at the end of a year will cost more than an expensive car. We sometimes buy things on a daily basis and end up spending more, will eat any food and exercise very little or not at all. You can choose to live in luxury by spending a little bit more now to gain in future. Dress well and be fashionable

Lifestyle Solutions For Everyone

0

The truth is that not everyone thinks in terms of improving their lifestyle. The entertainment industry makes everyone aware of the distinctions in lifestyles, but very few people view lifestyle solutions as a potential choice. Winning the lottery, although not a solution, is the limit for most imaginations.

The mindset that confines most people within their specific life experience is a combination of what they learn and the environment they know. Breaking free of the rut they recognize usually means finding a better job. Discovering a uniquely different lifestyle from what they know, requires a new mindset. By shifting our thoughts from the comfortable pattern of our lives, we uncover abilities, and possibilities never imagined.

Few people ever come upon the realization that self confidence isn’t a fixed commodity. Anyone who can dream of a new lifestyle, can through thoughtful application of proven principles, discover the solution. In fact dreaming is an actual step in the process. Desire continually draws us closer to our dreams when we follow a specific plan. Unless we lose the desire for our goal, self confidence grows as a by-product of our activity.

Specific lifestyle solutions aren’t found by accident. A solution always includes a problem. When we accurately identify the problem, we’ll be able to clearly define the solution. The problem will involve specific details regarding our current lifestyle. The solution will explain our desired lifestyle after we’ve added and subtracted certain elements from the problem.

So the current lifestyle comes under close observation and raises these questions:

1. Are you looking for more money?
2. Are you looking to relocate?
3. Are you getting adequate return on investment for your time?

For most people the lifestyle solution always involves more money. However, we cannot assume that this demands increased revenue. A financial study for the average person in North America shows that the elimination of debt not only creates an immediate budget surplus, but transforms the cycle of debt into a savings opportunity.

Even if the lifestyle goal is to become a self sufficient farmer, the financial advantage puts that individual into a unique category. Wherever we find people who are content with their financial situation, we witness a lifestyle that appreciates freedom from the fear of poverty. Not everyone will know contentment at the same financial level, just like not everyone will desire the same lifestyle.

Part of the solution is to determine how much money is enough to satisfy us in life. We can’t arrive at an unspecified goal. If the sum hasn’t been defined, neither has the solution. So anything added or subtracted from our current situation simply reflects variations in our problem.

Where we live isn’t necessarily part of our problem, but our home involves more than its location. Typically our vision of an improved lifestyle includes improvements to our home, or a new one. If our new lifestyle demands a house on the beach, it doesn’t mean we have to move. Choosing to move, like choosing a new beach house, or any luxury item, are all variables in the formula we use to reach the solution.

The solution might include relocation for many different reasons. If we dream about returning to the small village in England where we grew up, then it is part of our solution. If however we dream about visiting that village on a regular basis, the solution isn’t the same. If the answer to our quest for the perfect lifestyle has us traveling the world until the end of our days, the relocation portion of our solution will look like a travel guide.

The person who accepts a promotion at work so that their family can appreciate a better quality of life, is similar to the person who accepts the responsibility to discover a new lifestyle. The demands of a higher paying job usually include longer hours and may include extended business engagements away from home. Lifestyle solutions include a measurable value of time.

Without including an accurate expectation of the time it will take to maintain my new lifestyle, it is reasonable to believe I won’t have any.

The executive or business owner that makes a decision to sacrifice time for the rest of the items in the solution, only complicates the problem. Our time is more valuable than anything else we can include in a perfect lifestyle. Unlike money or new homes, time cannot be replaced.

So the style of life I desire looks something like this:

1. The establishment of financial freedom as a legacy for my family.
2. The freedom to reside wherever we want, whenever we want.
3. The time to enjoy life with those I love.

The details of my specific lifestyle goals reflect the deep desires and ambitions which are mine alone. Within the greater explanation of my solution these three components can be found. Without them I don’t have an accurate answer to the problem. With them I have lifestyle solutions that will work for anyone.
